  • ENVY

    ENVY

Envy—the green-eyed monster that creeps into our minds when we see others achieving what we desire. It’s a natural emotion, but how we channel it determines our path. Instead of stewing in envy, let’s transform it into motivation. Here’s a blueprint to turn envy into action and pave the way toward our goals.

Are you better off than someone else? Of course you are. Being able to read this post means you either have a smartphone or a personal computer connected to the internet which all costs money.

Are you sure you are better off than someone else? Of course not. You look at your social media feeds and see your friends posting filtered pictures of themselves, of the food they are about to eat, of places they have been, shot in what seemed to be a perfect setting, perfect lighting and perfect angle.

We always compare our situations with other people. We want to know what others are up to and are we doing better in life compared to them. Do we have a better phone? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe we justify that the phone we have is what we really want and need. Or is that just us making enough reasons because what we currently spend most of the time holding in our hands is what we can only afford?

How about the house that we live in? When we visit other people’s house that are bigger than ours or seem to be designed by a famous interior designer that costs a lot of money, we stand in awe and appreciate it. We start envisioning having the same thing for ourselves. Then, go back to thinking that we can’t afford it and we have what we need.

The car that we have. Not all of us have their own personal car. For those who have one, on the road, we again tend to compare what we have. “Is my car better?” That’s the thought that immediately comes to our minds.

A close friend of mine had just bought their own house in Batangas and had moved there to live. My initial thought was to buy our own house then I went back to saying to myself that we are better off renting as we love our house now. Well, that’s true. Not just reasoning. This house has brought us many luck in this decade and continues to do so. That’s what we believe. We don’t want to move anymore.

Another friend of mine just received the bad news that the school where she had enrolled her daughters suddenly shut down due to insufficient enrollment. My initial thought? We had chosen a better school for our kids. We are better than her.

We always compare our situation with others, specially to those people we know. From what I read, it is survival instincts that kick in. If we are better off, we have better chances of survival. If we are not, then we need to do something or we get left behind by the society we want to belong and live in.

Don’t feel bad. It is okay to experience this sort of emotion. Most articles you’ll read will say otherwise because it is not mentally healthy or even right to feel envious of the success of others. But to me, it is okay. What’s important is what you do. Action is the only thing that will define you.

If you feel envious of what others have, don’t immediately jump onto the bandwagon. If you really want it, create a plan.

    • What do you want?
    • How will you get it?
    • When are you going to start?
    • Do it.

These three questions would really help you control and manage your thoughts, rather than just being emotional, and turn it to actionable items that will take you to where you want to be.

When you see you are better off than someone else, then lend a hand. The people in the street begging, give some alms. Your relatives struggling with their own problems, help them. If your friends are experiencing something you don’t want to go through yourself, be there as much as you can.

Whatever reason we come up for ourselves justifying being envious or feeling better than others, accept that it is okay. But don’t wallow in that feeling. It will not help you. It will destroy you.

If you really want it, do something about it.

Before embarking on any journey, clarity is essential. Ask yourself: What do you want? Is it financial independence, a fulfilling career, or a healthier lifestyle? Be specific. Write it down. Visualize it. Whether it’s a corner office, a cozy home, or a fit physique, articulate your desires.

    Analyze Your Emotions

Envy often masks deeper feelings. Is it admiration for someone else’s success or frustration with your own stagnation? Understand the root cause. Perhaps you’re inspired by a colleague’s promotion or a friend’s thriving business. Acknowledge these emotions—they’re your compass.

    Create a Plan

Envy dissipates when we take action. How will you get what you want? Break it down. Research, learn, and strategize. If it’s financial independence, explore investment options, side hustles, or passive income streams. If it’s a dream job, update your resume, network, and acquire relevant skills.

    Set Realistic Goals

Envy can lead to impulsive decisions. Instead, set achievable milestones. If you envy someone’s fitness, don’t sign up for a marathon tomorrow. Start with a daily walk or a gym membership. Gradual progress compounds over time. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

    Take the First Step

When are you going to start? The answer: Now. Procrastination fuels envy. Begin today. Send that email, enroll in that course, or save that first dollar. Momentum builds momentum. Each small action propels you forward.

    Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Envy thrives in a fixed mindset—the belief that abilities are innate. Shift to a growth mindset. Embrace challenges, learn from failures, and celebrate others’ successes. Their achievements aren’t your limitations; they’re proof of what’s possible.

    Celebrate Progress

As you progress, celebrate every victory. Whether it’s paying off debt, acing an interview, or shedding a few pounds, acknowledge it. Envy loses its grip when you recognize your own growth.

Envy need not be a stumbling block. It can be a stepping stone. Transform it into determination, and watch your dreams materialize. So, dear reader, what do you want? How will you get it? When will you start? The answer lies within you. Do it.

  • DIFFICULT

    DIFFICULT

When life gets difficult, do you ever feel like giving up? With everything that is going on with your life, do you feel like calling it quits?

Do you ever think it is too hard, that you just wish that everyone will just shut up?

Do you think you have hit rock bottom? Like you are suffocating and really just want to get out?

Like what you see is the end and there is nowhere to go?

Many times we get eaten up by our emotions. That we feel crying and just curl up in a ball. That it feels so good to cry and let all those tears run down. That everything is so difficult it is so draining and you just want to stop. Push everyone away and be left alone to your worries and pains.

It is okay. Just let it out.
There is nothing wrong with it.
It is the way we cope. It is survival. Just let it out. Shout if you must.

Then…stand up. No use in forever sulking and crying and feeling sorry for yourself. Life is difficult. Nothing is easy. Accept that.
What you need to understand is you can do something about it.

And it starts with standing up.

    • Stand up. Focus on what’s in front of you.
    • Take that first step. Focus on what you can do now.
    • Take another step. One action at a time
    • And take another step. You’ll see, each action you do will take you away from your slumber.

    Accept your reality.

Be thankful for your present. Identify what you want to achieve Take one action at a time.

Don’t worry. You are not alone. Everyone around you is going through something.

Just don’t forget…you are always stronger than the situation.

The struggle, the feeling of being trapped, and the overwhelming emotions that can consume us at times can be incredibly challenging to bear. It’s not uncommon to find yourself at a loss, feeling like giving up and wanting to retreat from the world. This is a natural part of the human experience, and it’s essential to acknowledge these emotions without judgment. It’s okay to feel the weight of the world pressing down on you, to feel suffocated and weary.

In these moments, giving yourself the space to release those pent-up feelings is a form of self-compassion. Crying, shouting, or letting out a deep sigh can serve as a release valve, allowing you to process the intensity of your emotions. Remember, it’s okay not to be okay.

Taking the time to acknowledge and validate your feelings, without judgment, is an important part of self-care. By allowing yourself to experience and express your emotions, you are honoring your internal experience and taking steps toward healing. It’s a gentle reminder that amidst the storm of emotions, you are deserving of kindness and understanding, both from yourself and from those around you. So, as you navigate through these challenging moments, grant yourself the grace to feel what you feel, knowing that it’s an essential part of the human experience.

However, after allowing yourself to feel and experience those emotions, it’s crucial to recognize the inner strength that resides within you. It’s about acknowledging that life is filled with hurdles and challenges, but it’s also about realizing that you possess the resilience and determination necessary to confront these obstacles head-on.

Furthermore, it’s important to remember that growth often occurs outside of our comfort zones. Embracing and navigating through challenges can lead to personal development and a deeper understanding of our capabilities. This recognition of inner fortitude can serve as a guiding light during difficult times, reminding us that we have the power to endure and overcome. Ultimately, the acknowledgment of one’s strength and resilience can be a source of empowerment and motivation, fueling the belief that adversity can be navigated with courage and tenacity.

Taking that first step, no matter how small it may seem, is an act of courage. It’s about focusing on the present moment and identifying the actionable steps that can propel you forward, step by step. Each action you take, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has the potential to lead you away from the shadows of despair and towards a path of empowerment.

Remind yourself that you are not alone. Everyone around you is fighting their battle, navigating their way through their own trials and tribulations. In this shared struggle, there’s a sense of solidarity — a reminder that strength can be found in unity.

It’s easy to feel isolated when facing challenges, but it’s important to recognize that everyone around you is fighting their own battles and navigating their way through trials and tribulations. In this shared struggle, there’s a powerful sense of solidarity, reminding us that strength and resilience can be found in unity. This realization can provide comfort and support as we move forward, knowing that we are part of a community all facing our own difficulties and triumphs.

  • Differences | Understanding Each Other

    Differences | Understanding Each Other

Our differences make it difficult for us to live harmoniously. The challenges posed by our unique individualities often hinder our ability to coexist peacefully. It is through embracing and understanding these differences that we can strive to create a more harmonious environment. When we acknowledge and appreciate the diversity amongst us, we open the door for meaningful collaboration and mutual respect. In doing so, we can work towards a more inclusive and understanding society, fostering a sense of unity despite our contrasting perspectives.

We all are different from each other. We all have our own beliefs, biases, inclinations, etc. I’ve seen people fight over small and big things. I’ve fought with many people, lost connection to some, and stressed out most days.

We all are indeed different from each other, and it’s the diversity of beliefs, biases, inclinations, and experiences that shapes our unique identities. Conflict is an inherent part of human interaction, and it’s not uncommon to witness or experience disputes, whether they’re over trivial matters or significant issues. Personally, I’ve encountered my fair share of disagreements with others, leading to the loss of connections with some individuals and causing stress on most days. It’s a reminder of the complexities of human relationships and the importance of empathy and understanding in navigating our differences.

Sometimes, you can’t really teach an old dog a new trick.

But, what I’ve learned is that while we are all different from each other, we can always go beyond that by choice and all starts with respect.

The value of respect cannot be understated in our interactions with others. It serves as the foundation for building meaningful connections and understanding, regardless of our differences. Embracing the concept of respect allows us to bridge gaps that may exist due to our unique individual traits, beliefs, and backgrounds. Through this choice to respect one another, we create an environment where diversity is celebrated, and where the potential for collaboration and mutual growth is limitless. Therefore, by acknowledging and honoring each other’s differences, we not only enrich our own experiences but also contribute to the greater tapestry of humanity.

Accept that we are all different. Our reaction to things is always brought by our own beliefs and biases. We cannot force people to see the way we see things.

Understanding and acknowledging individual differences is a fundamental aspect of human interaction. Our responses and perspectives are deeply influenced by our unique set of beliefs, experiences, and biases. It’s crucial to recognize that attempting to impose our own views on others is not only futile but also disregards the rich tapestry of diverse perspectives that enrich our world. Embracing the multiplicity of viewpoints and appreciating the intricate interplay of beliefs and biases can lead to greater empathy, understanding, and collaboration.

But, to grow, we need to see how other people see things. How?

    • Ask questions. Be truly interested. Our questions should not sound like we are questioning the integrity of the person but instead to truly understand.

When engaging in a conversation, it’s important to emphasize the value of asking questions with a genuine intention to understand. By being truly interested and asking thoughtful questions, we can effectively convey our desire to comprehend the perspectives and experiences of others. It’s crucial that the manner in which we pose our questions doesn’t come across as doubting someone’s integrity, but rather reflects a sincere curiosity and openness to gaining insight. This approach fosters an environment of respect and empathy, allowing for meaningful and constructive communication.

    • Stop. Once you understand, stop there. Not everything is a debate. What you want to do is different from what another person wants to do. Don’t keep pushing.

Understanding the importance of halting our actions when we fully comprehend a situation is crucial. It’s essential to recognize that not every circumstance warrants or benefits from a debate. Each individual’s desires and intentions are unique, and it’s vital to respect these differences. Continuously pushing one’s agenda onto others can be counterproductive and can lead to unnecessary conflict and tension.

It’s important to emphasize the significance of empathy and understanding in our interactions with others. Taking the time to comprehend diverse perspectives and acknowledging the validity of differing opinions can greatly contribute to harmonious relationships and effective communication. Knowing when to pause and respect differing viewpoints is a valuable aspect of social interactions that can foster mutual respect and understanding.

    • Breath. If you are feeling emotional, breathe deeply and slowly. This will truly calm your nerves and your mind. Approach things objectively.

When faced with intense emotions, taking a moment to focus on your breath can be incredibly beneficial. By engaging in deep, slow breaths, you allow your body and mind to find a sense of calm and clarity. This simple act can have a profound impact on your well-being, helping to regulate your emotions and bring a sense of balance to your inner world. Moreover, by approaching situations with objectivity, you can gain a clearer perspective, enabling you to make decisions and navigate challenges more effectively. Embracing this holistic approach can lead to a more harmonious and centered way of living.

    • Speak. Say what you want to say in a calm manner. No one is out to get you.

Speak. Say what you want to say in a calm manner. No one is out to get you.

It’s important to express your thoughts and feelings in a composed and collected manner. By doing so, you can ensure that your message is effectively communicated without unnecessary tension or conflict. Remember that everyone has their own perspectives and motivations, and approaching communication with a sense of understanding and openness can lead to more productive interactions.

Understanding diverse perspectives is pivotal for personal and collective development. When we open ourselves to the viewpoints of others, we enrich our understanding of the world and broaden our horizons. By seeking out different outlooks, we can cultivate empathy, deepen our knowledge, and foster a more inclusive and harmonious society. Embracing the diversity of human experience enables us to transcend barriers and work towards a more interconnected and compassionate global community.

Let’s go beyond ourselves. We are just a very tiny speck in the vast of multiverses (MCU fan!).

We are just a blink of an eye in time.

  • Disadvantage | Comparing and Grateful

    Disadvantage | Comparing and Grateful

A lot of people just realized how much of a disadvantage they are in life. At the same time, those who are blessed forget how much they have and are able to go through any hardships.

You may have not realized this but the pandemic has thought us a valuable lesson – we are better off than most people.

The pandemic forced businesses to close down and lay off a lot of people. Us? We still have our jobs.

The pandemic forced schools to be online. Many children in rural areas had to stop. Our kids? No. We have internet and a computer at home.

The pandemic forced public transportation to stop. Many drivers had nothing to feed their families and had to beg on the street. Us? No. We still worked and got fat.

A lot of us think we do not have what we want. A lot of us think we are having a hard time. A lot us feel that we don’t have enough.

And, you know what? That’s okay. You are looking for something else. We must not compare our situation to anyone else because we all have different stories.

But, one thing you must not forget is to be grateful for everything that you have because many are unlucky. They go day by day thinking about where to get their food.

The pandemic has indeed taught us valuable lessons about gratitude and perspective. While it’s true that we may often feel that we lack certain things or face difficult times, it’s essential to remember to be grateful for what we do have. In many ways, we are better off than others, and acknowledging this can help cultivate a sense of appreciation for the circumstances we find ourselves in.

Amid the pandemic, numerous businesses faced closures, leading to job losses for many individuals. However, recognizing that we still have our jobs can serve as a reminder of the fortune we possess. Additionally, the shift to online schooling posed significant challenges for children in rural areas, highlighting disparities in access to educational resources. In contrast, if we are fortunate enough to have internet and computers at home for our kids, it underscores the importance of being mindful of our privileges.

Furthermore, as public transportation halted in many areas, numerous drivers struggled to provide for their families. Being able to continue working without such obstacles is a circumstance to be appreciative of. It’s crucial to acknowledge that everyone has a different story, and comparison to others often leads to misconceptions about our own situation. Perhaps, it’s not about having what we want, but rather recognizing and appreciating what we do have.

Being grateful for the abundance in our lives and the opportunities we are presented with is important, as there are many individuals who face greater challenges and hardships on a daily basis. It’s a reminder to be conscious of the privileges we possess and to never take them for granted.

Look around you now and be thankful for:

    • The house you are in. The office you are in.
    • The food you are eating. The drink that you are having.
    • The clothes you are wearing.
    • The computer you are using.
    • The money you have in your wallet. The money you have in your bank.
    • The money you have in your piggy bank.
    • The family you have.
    • The friends you have.
    • The work you have.
    • And many other things.

I’ve been in a situation before where I hate everything I had and I want to change everything that I almost lost it all. That was my realization. It was not I want to change it. I just want to improve what I have.

And it all started with being grateful for everything. You’ll see, once you feel grateful for everything that you have, everything will slowly change for the better.

We are all better than most people. We are at an advantage. Let’s all use that.

Sometimes, we reach a point in our lives where we yearn for major changes, whether they’re personal, professional, or related to our surroundings. Recognizing the desire to transform our lives can be a powerful moment of self-awareness. In your case, it seems like the initial impulse of wanting to discard everything shifted towards a more balanced perspective of seeking improvement. This shift can be incredibly positive as it allows for a more thoughtful and measured approach to change.

It’s important to acknowledge that the desire for change can stem from a variety of factors, such as feeling stagnant, unfulfilled, or simply seeking growth. Embracing this desire with a mindset focused on improvement rather than complete upheaval can lead to more sustainable and satisfying results. It’s a testament to your resilience and adaptability that you’ve recognized this distinction and are striving for enhancement rather than erasure.

Remember, change doesn’t always have to be drastic. Small, intentional adjustments can accumulate into significant progress. Self-reflection and setting achievable goals are powerful tools as you navigate this journey of improvement. It’s about fine-tuning what you have, nurturing it, and allowing it to evolve, rather than seeking a clean slate. This mindset can instill a sense of empowerment as you take ownership of your life and actively work towards enhancing it.

Ultimately, the decision to seek improvement and growth is indicative of strength and determination. Embracing this mindset, you can gradually shape your life in a way that is truly fulfilling and aligned with your aspirations.

Change is a fundamental aspect of life, a constant that we all experience in one form or another. It’s important to acknowledge that the desire for change can stem from a variety of factors. For some, it may be a feeling of stagnation, a sense that they are stuck in a rut and yearning for something different. For others, it may be a sense of unfulfillment, a nagging feeling that they are not living up to their potential or that their current situation is not satisfying their needs or aspirations.

In some cases, the desire for change is not born out of dissatisfaction, but rather a simple desire for growth. It’s a natural human instinct to want to evolve, to learn, to improve, and to strive for better. This desire can manifest in various ways, from seeking new experiences and knowledge to striving for personal development and self-improvement.

However, it’s crucial to approach this desire for change with the right mindset. Instead of focusing on complete upheaval, which can be disruptive and often unsustainable, it’s more beneficial to focus on improvement. This means identifying areas of your life or aspects of yourself that you wish to enhance and working towards that in a gradual, consistent manner. This approach can lead to more sustainable and satisfying results, as it’s based on building upon what already exists rather than trying to start from scratch.

Recognizing this distinction is a testament to your resilience and adaptability. It shows that you are not simply reacting to circumstances, but rather making conscious choices about your direction in life. It demonstrates that you are not seeking to erase your past or your present, but rather to enhance it. You are striving for enhancement rather than erasure, building upon your experiences and learning from them to create a better future.

In conclusion, the desire for change is a powerful force that can drive us to seek better and strive for more. However, it’s important to approach this desire with a mindset of improvement rather than upheaval, focusing on enhancement rather than erasure. This approach not only leads to more sustainable and satisfying results but also reflects our resilience and adaptability. It’s a testament to our ability to learn from our experiences, grow from them, and use them as stepping stones towards a better future.

  • When pride and greed comes

    When pride and greed comes

Pride and greed are two human traits that have the word “excess” tied to its meaning. It all boils down to having more than enough – having more than what is needed.

When is enough? What makes us push for more? When do we stop?

You started working to support your family. Spent hours at work. Learned the ropes and all. With each passing day that became months and years, you felt the potential of being the boss. Having your own team. Living a dream. Buying what money can bring. Pushing for more and climbing.

As time went on, your ambitions grew stronger. The daily grind and hard work became the foundation of your journey towards success. The challenges you faced only fueled your determination to carve out your own path, leading to the realization of your potential as a leader. You envisioned creating a team of your own, where you could cultivate a positive working environment and inspire others to reach their full potential. This dream fueled your relentless pursuit of success, driving you to strive for more and reach new heights in your career. The prospect of achieving financial stability and affording the luxuries that come with it motivated you to keep pushing forward, continuously climbing the ladder of success. Each step you took was infused with the unwavering determination to turn your aspirations into a reality, and you were unwavering in your pursuit of your dreams.

When do you stop? When do you say you have enough? When do you feel satisfied? When do it end? When do you rest?

Walter White is the lead character in the series Breaking Bad. He is a chemistry teacher who has cancer and afraid to leave nothing, resorted to cooking meth to save up money that would be enough for their kids college tuition. However, with his greed and ego, he did not stop when he finally earned $700k+. He wanted an empire. By doing so, a lot of people got killed, he lost his family and died in the end.

The slow-burn crime TV show got me hooked because I was holding into the hope that he’ll change his ways and realize that his pride and greed are eating him alive. I was wrong. Only in the finale episode of the show did he do something not for himself. Well, maybe not.

When do we stop? When we think we can get more, we always go for more. I think that is the most basic foundation of the seven deadly sins. All of it are definition of any action that is excess of what is needed. More sex, more desires, more food, more about self, more for self, more hate, and more nothingness.

`When do we stop? When we think we can get more, we always go for more. I think that is the most basic foundation of the seven deadly sins. All of it are definition of any action that is excess of what is needed. More sex, more desires, more food, more about self, more for self, more hate, and more nothingness. In our relentless pursuit of excess, we often lose sight of what is truly important. The insatiable desire for more can lead to a never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction and unhappiness. It’s a reminder to pause and reflect on the choices we make, to find contentment in simplicity and gratitude for what we already have. Our actions can be guided by a sense of sufficiency rather than an endless quest for more. Finding balance and moderation in our pursuits can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Let’s ponder on the wisdom of knowing when to stop and embracing sufficiency in all aspects of our lives.

I do not think it is wrong to desire something to make our lives better. To live a comfortable life. To provide better things to our loved ones. However, when we keep aiming for more and more than what we really need, I think that is when greed comes.

I do not think it is wrong to desire something to make our lives better. To live a comfortable life. To provide better things to our loved ones. However, when we keep aiming for more and more than what we really need, I think that is when greed comes.

The desire for improvement is a natural and essential part of the human experience. Wanting to enhance our quality of life and provide for our loved ones is motivated by a sense of responsibility and compassion. Striving for comfort and security is a fundamental aspect of seeking happiness and well-being.

However, as this pursuit intensifies, it can lead to excessive accumulation and consumption. When the quest for more goes beyond fulfilling genuine needs and transitions into a relentless pursuit of excess, it transforms into greed. Greed can cloud our judgment, foster dissatisfaction, and overshadow the value of non-material aspects of life such as relationships, experiences, and personal growth.

Therefore, while it is reasonable to aspire to improve our lives, it is crucial to maintain a balance and perspective, ensuring that our desires remain in harmony with genuine needs and do not give in to insatiable consumerism. Achieving a sense of contentment with what we have can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life, free from the detrimental effects of unchecked greed.

Instead of being grateful that we have a working phone in our hands, we desire the one others are using. Instead of spending real time with the people we want to spend time with, we desire to go to places that we see on our feeds. Instead of being content with what we have, we look for something else.

Instead of being grateful that we have a working phone in our hands, we desire the one others are using. Instead of spending real time with the people we want to spend time with, we desire to go to places that we see on our feeds. Instead of being content with what we have, we look for something else.

In today’s society, it’s common for individuals to overlook the value of what they already possess. Oftentimes, the constant exposure to what others have or experience through social media and other platforms can create a sense of inadequacy or discontentment with our own lives. Instead of appreciating the convenience of having a functional phone, we may find ourselves longing for the latest model or being envious of others’ possessions. Similarly, the time we spend with loved ones should be cherished, yet the influence of social media can lead to a desire for glamorous experiences seen online rather than authentic connections with those around us. This perpetual cycle of comparison and longing can hinder our ability to find contentment and appreciation for the present moment. It’s important to reflect on these tendencies and strive to refocus on gratitude and genuine human connections, valuing what we have rather than constantly seeking for something external to fulfill us.

Again, having better things to have a comfortable life for ourselves and our loved ones is not wrong. Go for it. But, be conscious and see where your life is now. First, be thankful. And second, know what is enough for you. If these two are not established, prepare for a very miserable life.

Understanding the balance between striving for a better life and appreciating what we already have is crucial. It’s natural to want comfort and security for ourselves and our loved ones. However, it’s equally important to remain conscious of our current circumstances and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives. Achieving a sense of contentment and sufficiency is key to avoiding a sense of perpetual dissatisfaction. Without this foundation, the pursuit of material wealth and success can lead to a perpetual sense of longing and discontentment.

  • Choosing business over people

    Choosing business over people

Choosing business over people may sound like a bad thing. However, it is the reality. Businesses exist to earn money. And most companies will result to drastic measures to ensure profits are there, even if it means letting go of people.

Of course, the business comes first. In all honesty, if the business is not profitable, there would not be jobs. But, when staff reduction happens, more work is given to the few left. Have we considered its impact on their mental health?

Truth be told. We all know this. Businesses exist to make money. Whatever the “whys” or “vision statements” there are that business owners say, it is all about money. Why even venture into something that will take up too much time and effort if it is not about it. Right?

It’s an undeniable fact that the primary goal of businesses is to generate revenue. While entrepreneurs may articulate lofty mission statements and aspirations, the underlying driving force is financial gain. It’s rational to question the rationale behind investing significant time and resources if not for the pursuit of monetary success. The bottom line is a critical factor in the existence and sustainability of any enterprise, shaping decisions and strategies at every turn.

Businesses exist because of money. We join any company because we want to get paid. It is not because we believe in the company’s mission and vision. We needed the job. We need to work. We need to get paid. We need the money.

Understanding the relationship between businesses and individuals is crucial in today’s world. Indeed, the financial aspect is a significant driving force behind why individuals seek employment. While monetary compensation is a key factor in job decisions, it’s essential to acknowledge that other elements also play a role. Factors such as job satisfaction, personal fulfillment, opportunities for growth, and alignment with the company’s values and vision also contribute to the overall work experience. By considering these additional aspects, individuals can strive for a more comprehensive and rewarding employment journey, where financial stability harmonizes with personal and professional growth.

And as much as we want to believe that the business takes care of its people first, money will always become a priority when push comes to shove. When bad situations are rising endangering the existence of the business, aside from reducing other costs, it is the labor force that will really feel the impact.

In times of economic hardship or organizational restructuring, employees often bear the brunt of the burden. This can lead to heightened stress, decreased job satisfaction, and even implications for their physical and mental well-being. It’s essential for businesses to navigate challenging times with empathy and a focus on finding equitable solutions that prioritize the welfare of their employees, who are integral to the success and sustainability of the enterprise.

Now, how much effort you put into your work, become recognized, climb the corporate ladder, and earn that covetous title, if profits are down, none of those will matter. You are still at risk of losing that job.

It’s undeniable that the value of hard work, recognition, career advancement, and achieving coveted professional titles is significant in the pursuit of a successful and fulfilling career. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that in the dynamic and competitive landscape of the professional world, the performance and financial stability of the organization hold immense importance. Despite an individual’s dedication and accomplishments, when a company’s profits decline, it can lead to challenging circumstances, including the potential risk of job insecurity.

The impact of economic downturns, unexpected market shifts, or internal financial challenges within an organization can overshadow individual achievements and hard work. This situation can result in increased vulnerability to potential layoffs, restructurings, or other workforce adjustments, regardless of an employee’s efforts and contributions to the company’s success. Therefore, it’s essential for professionals to not only focus on personal career development but also remain cognizant of the broader economic and organizational factors that can influence the stability of their employment.

Navigating through such circumstances requires a multifaceted approach, which may involve proactive measures such as enhancing professional skills, diversifying expertise, fostering strong internal and external relationships, and staying informed about industry trends. Additionally, maintaining a flexible and adaptable mindset can be pivotal in responding to fluctuating organizational dynamics while safeguarding one’s professional standing.

Staff reduction impacts a lot of things. The first obvious one is workload. Those who will be considered to stay will do as much as twice as before for the same pay as before. Morale gets impacted especially for those who feel they could be next. Mental health gets affected as stress, pressure, longer hours, and lack of sleep gets you just to make sure the business survive this turbulent times.

A lot of people have told me that moving from one company to another is all about the money. Well, that can not be farther from the truth. Again, we join companies because we need to get paid for the work. Other stuff like company brand names, we know people, we believe in what they do, etc, are just additional reasons we tell ourselves to justify the move and not to come off to other people as someone who is just after the money.

When considering a job change, it’s important to take into account various factors that contribute to overall job satisfaction and fulfillment. While financial compensation is undoubtedly a significant aspect of any job, it’s not the sole driving force behind professional decisions. As individuals, we seek opportunities that align with our values, allow us to grow personally and professionally, and provide a sense of purpose.

Company culture, the potential for career advancement, the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, and a supportive work environment are all factors that can weigh heavily in the decision to transition from one company to another. These elements contribute to a fulfilling work experience and can significantly impact overall job satisfaction. It’s important to acknowledge and prioritize these aspects alongside financial considerations when evaluating potential career moves.

So, if businesses prioritize money and people are there for money, what can we do?

First, do not get attached to the business name/brand. Second, save and invest. Third, accept that the world works as it is. Can change but I don’t know as to what.

At the end of the day, no matter what inspirational words you read, or what motivating vision you see, or even promises of a great career track, when profits are not met, the business will always take action to get more money.

  • When you realize your “NO” is powerful

When you realize your “NO” is powerful

Have you tried saying NO to things that life throws at you that you do not like? Or are you still saying YES because you have no choice?

When I started working for a call center, I had no idea what I was getting into. All I know is that I have to get a job because I have a family to support. It was almost a year from my graduation rites and I was still looking for work.

So, just armed with knowing how to speak English and the knowledge that I’ll be talking to customers, I took my chances in one of the pioneers of call centers in the Philippines.

As I stepped into the call center, the buzzing atmosphere and the constant sound of ringing phones were overwhelming. Despite the initial challenges and the uncertainty of what lay ahead, I was determined to give my best. Gradually, I became more adept at handling customer inquiries, resolving issues, and developing my communication skills. The experience taught me resilience and the value of perseverance during tough times. I realized that this job not only provided for my family but also helped me grow both personally and professionally. Each day brought new experiences and opportunities for growth, and I am grateful for the lessons I learned during my time at the call center.

And from then on, I had progressed my career from an agent to becoming a workforce management professional who, for those who do not know, is the one who determines how many people do we need to hire, keep, and/or let go. As a workforce management professional, I have been responsible for forecasting staffing needs, creating schedules, monitoring attendance, and adjusting staffing levels as necessary to meet service level and budget targets. This role requires a deep understanding of the business’s operations, the ability to analyze data and workforce trends, and the skill to make strategic decisions that impact the organization’s performance and the employees’ well-being. It’s a challenging yet rewarding position that plays a crucial role in the success of an organization.

As of this moment, my entire career is all about saying YES. Following what my supervisor told me. Doing things that the manager was asking me to. Acting differently to manage the perception of others. And so on.

Eventually, this created a very stressful situation for me. Listening to what other people say and changing. Doing things to their liking. Being the person people expect you to be. These are just some that took a toll in me.

It’s unfortunate when we find ourselves in situations where we feel compelled to constantly say yes and conform to the expectations of others. This pattern can be draining and may lead to feelings of disconnection from our true desires and ambitions. It’s essential to find a way to assert our own needs and aspirations while maintaining professionalism and cooperation in the workplace.

One approach is to practice assertiveness, which involves expressing our thoughts and needs in a direct and respectful manner. By communicating openly with supervisors and managers, it’s possible to establish boundaries and express our perspectives on tasks and projects. Additionally, seeking opportunities for personal and professional development can empower us to take control of our career path and pursue roles and tasks that align with our genuine interests and strengths. Remember, it’s not about always saying no, but about finding a balance that honors both our own ambitions and the needs of the organization.

Before you get those eyebrows crossed because of what you read and say that it is my fault for being such a person, I ask you first to look back on your career up to now and think of the times when you were the one in control of the work in accordance with what you want. I bet there are just very few and little moments or even, you can not remember anything at all.

    https://www.andrewthorpking.com

Now, what I am trying to say here is the moment you say NO (well, not disrespectful to your boss) to things around you (not just work) and only say YES to things and everyone that matters to you, personally, you will have a more peaceful life enjoying doing things that you put value on.

The essence of learning to say “no” without being disrespectful and embracing the power of “yes” towards the things and people that truly matter in both personal and professional spheres is a fundamental principle of leading a more fulfilling and peaceful life. When you prioritize your commitments and responsibilities based on personal values and significance, you create a life characterized by genuine happiness and contentment. It allows you to invest your time and energy in endeavors that resonate with your beliefs and aspirations, fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment. This approach enables you to savor every moment and activity, knowing that they align with your authentic desires and contribute positively to your overall well-being.

There comes a point in our lives that we all have to make a realization of what is important for us. What are the things we consider that will bring impact to our lives and to those people around us are the things we value. Thus, when we get to this point, we can honestly say NO to things that we do not care about and only say YES to everything we want. This transition signifies a moment of clarity, a shift in perspective that allows us to discern between the essential and the superfluous. It’s the moment when we realize the power we hold to prioritize our own happiness and well-being, as well as the positive influence we can have on the lives of others. Saying NO to the unnecessary enables us to focus our energy on endeavors that truly resonate with our aspirations and values, empowering us to wholeheartedly embrace the opportunities and experiences that align with our authentic desires. By consciously choosing to prioritize our passions and the things that truly matter, we shape a life that is rich in meaning and fulfillment, resonating authenticity and purpose in every aspect. This intentional approach to decision-making becomes a catalyst for personal growth and genuine connections, fostering a sense of contentment and empowerment that permeates every facet of our being.

Let me rephrase it a little. It is saying NO to those that you think will not bring you closer to your goals and only saying yes to those that will. We are still all different so my NOs will be different from your NOs.

  • Progression means more work

    Progression means more work

Do you really know what it means to get promoted? When you say you are ready to take on new responsibilities, is it really new or more?

Progression means more work. Moving up the career ladder requires more time and more effort from you. If you think you can do it, go for it. Otherwise, always consider your priorities.

When you started working, you just go through your tasks day on day. Complete your 8 hours working and maybe on some days extend a little bit whether you get paid or not. Why not? So far you are enjoying it. You like what you are doing. You want to be there not just because you get paid, but because you like it.

There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with dedicating yourself to something you truly enjoy. The feeling of fulfillment when you invest your time and effort into a job that resonates with your passion is unparalleled. It’s not just about the hours spent but the genuine interest and enthusiasm that drives you forward. When work doesn’t feel like a chore, but rather a meaningful pursuit, every moment spent there becomes valuable.

And as you eagerly give your best each day, the prospect of going above and beyond becomes second nature. You’re driven not solely by the clock but by the sheer pleasure of contributing to something you deeply care about. It’s this intrinsic motivation and dedication that elevates your work from a mere obligation to a source of personal fulfillment. The joy derived from immersing yourself in your work fuels your productivity, making every task an opportunity for growth and achievement. Your commitment to excellence extends beyond the routine as you strive to continuously improve and make meaningful contributions. So, by embracing your genuine passion and dedication, you pave the way for a truly rewarding journey in the professional world.

And maybe after a few months or years, your boss hands you additional tasks. You get excited because it is something new. You have something else to try on. And your boss considers you as the go-to guy. This is becoming a good path for you.

Finding yourself in this position is a testament to your skills and work ethic. Embrace these new challenges and responsibilities with enthusiasm, as they are opportunities to showcase your abilities and further enhance your professional development. Being entrusted with more tasks indicates that your supervisor values your contributions and believes in your capability to deliver excellent results. Take this as a vote of confidence in your abilities and a chance to broaden your expertise. As you continue to excel in these new endeavors, your value within the organization will undoubtedly grow, opening up even more doors for advancement and recognition. Keep up the great work!

Then, you think about getting promoted. Thinking about that money. Thinking about the team you will lead. Getting excited because you’ll have your own team to lead and guide. You become Captain America of the Avengers.

Not knowing that getting that promotion, getting higher up the corporate ladder, and having a team of your own will mean something else. You will have more work.

The journey to achieving a promotion and climbing higher up the corporate ladder, while exciting and rewarding in many ways, also comes with its own set of challenges and responsibilities. It’s essential to acknowledge that alongside the increased authority and potential for leadership in having a team of your own, there often comes a significant increase in workload and managerial duties. This shift can signify a tremendous opportunity for personal and professional growth, as well as a chance to positively impact the work environment and the lives of those within your team. Embracing this change requires a strategic and thoughtful approach to time management, delegation, and honing leadership skills to ensure that the added workload is met with efficiency and effectiveness. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of career advancement can empower individuals to navigate the complexities of their roles with resilience and determination.

You’ll be responsible for your entire team’s output. You’ll be responsible for assisting your boss with everything. You will have to think, decide, endorse, plan, monitor the team’s work, direct and so on. And all of these are more work and more time.

Now, I am not saying it is a bad thing. No. It can either be good or bad depending on what you want to do in your life.

Progressing in your career is good because it is a result of your hard work and by traditional definition, that is a success. Going up the corporate ladder tells a lot about how successful you are in your chosen field.

The pursuit of progress in one’s career is a commendable endeavor. Advancing through the ranks within a professional setting is often viewed as a well-deserved outcome of dedication and perseverance. By adhering to the traditional metrics of success, ascending the corporate ladder serves as a tangible indicator of one’s proficiency and triumph within their chosen industry. It signifies the culmination of relentless effort, acquired expertise, and the ability to navigate the intricate dynamics of the professional environment. Embracing the challenges and triumphs encountered along this journey further illustrates an individual’s commitment to their personal and professional growth.

And it becomes worse if you are just aiming for the title and money. When that is all that you are after, becoming a leader and having more responsibilities is not for you.

Progression means more work. It gives you more money. It requires you more time. If these are things you think you are ready for, make yourself prepared. If not, then, you are setting yourself to failure.

Progression in any aspect of life often entails putting in more effort and dedication. It’s a journey that demands commitment, time, and resources, and it’s not always an easy path to traverse. However, the potential rewards that come with progression can be substantial. As you advance, you may find yourself with greater financial stability, expanded opportunities, and personal growth. It’s crucial to assess whether you’re prepared for the challenges that come with this pursuit. If you believe you’re ready to take on the additional work, invest the necessary time, and make the requisite sacrifices, then you’re setting yourself on a path towards success and fulfillment. On the other hand, if you’re not willing to commit to the demands of progression, you may inadvertently be setting yourself up for setbacks and obstacles. It’s important to make an informed choice and be truly prepared for the journey ahead, as this will greatly influence your chances of achieving your goals.

My take on this is if you can not make a significant impact on the lives of others if you are not able to make a meaningful impact on the business, if, and most important of all, your mental health is at risk, then it is not worth climbing up.

Go get that promotion. Go get that money. Just consider that those two things are just rewards for what you will give in return – time and health.

  • Your story is your legacy

    Your story is your legacy

Our legacy is from our story. The actions we took. The impact we made. What we leave behind is what happens to those who we have impacted the most.

When you are gone, what do you want people to say about you? What are you living behind? How do you want to live your life before you die?

In your every waking hour, in your ever-busy life, are you aware of the impact it will have on other people? Will whoever you are now be remembered by at least the people around you? Are you living a life to your own selfish desires or towards the betterment of humankind as a society?

In every waking hour and amidst the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s crucial to pause and reflect on the impact our actions will have on those around us. Will our presence be remembered positively by the people in our immediate circles? Will our legacy be one of self-centered pursuits, or will it be marked by contributions toward the advancement and well-being of society as a whole? These questions compel us to consider the greater purpose of our existence and the mark we leave on the world. Taking a moment to evaluate the direction of our lives can lead to a deeper understanding of our roles within the broader tapestry of humanity, motivating us to strive for a legacy that transcends mere self-serving desires.

Take a step back and review what happened to your day yesterday. For us who are working for a company, our typical day would be to get up, grab a coffee, scroll through social media, play some mobile games, get a shower, watch TV, go to work, eat lunch or dinner, end our day, and sleep The following day we repeat it.

The daily routine for many working individuals often involves a sequence of familiar activities that provide comfort and structure. It begins with waking up and indulging in a cup of freshly brewed coffee, which serves as a catalyst for the day ahead. This may be followed by a leisurely scroll through social media, offering a glimpse into the lives of friends, family, and perhaps, one’s favorite celebrities. The routine may then transition to a casual session of mobile gaming, providing a brief escape from the demands of the day. After these moments of relaxation, it’s time to freshen up with a rejuvenating shower, preparing for the day either at work or at home.

At work, the day unfolds with various tasks, meetings, and interactions, interspersed with the much-anticipated lunch break or, for those working into the evening, a satisfying dinner. These meals serve as a pause, allowing individuals to recharge and refuel for the remaining hours of their workday. Finally, as the day draws to a close, there might be time to unwind in front of the TV, catch up on favorite shows, or wind down with a movie.

Reflecting on this perpetual cycle of activities, it becomes apparent that each day carries its own blend of familiarity and unique moments, providing the opportunity to find joy, fulfillment, and recharge before embarking on the next day’s adventures.

Maybe once in a while, we go out with friends. Maybe during the weekends, we go out with our families. Maybe sometime in the year, we take a vacation. Maybe some other days, we go to some events like concerts, food halls, or anything else. Or maybe attend some grand family events like weddings, birthdays, funerals, etc.

If we take a step back, get to higher ground, and look at our lives from a bird’s eye view, what do we realize have we done with our lives? Do we think it is something worth remembering? Have we made a significant impact on the lives of others? What are we leaving to the world and generations to come?

These introspective questions prod us to reflect on the legacy we are creating with our existence. Often, the hustle and bustle of daily life obstructs our ability to pause and ponder the broader implications of our actions. However, a moment of contemplation can unravel profound insights. As we review the mosaic of our journey, we unearth the footprints we’ve etched into the tapestry of time. Each act of kindness, every endeavor, and the relationships we nurture contribute to the narrative of our lives.

The weight of our actions is not solely determined by their scale, but rather by the sincerity and impact they carry. Whether we have touched lives through simple gestures of compassion or through grand initiatives, the significance lies in the genuineness of our intentions. An empathetic ear, a helping hand extended in times of need, or a heartfelt word of encouragement can reverberate through the lives of others, creating a ripple effect that transcends generations.

Considering what we impart to the world, the question arises: what inheritance are we bequeathing to posterity? Our actions, values, and the wisdom we impart to future generations lay the foundation for the world that will greet them. Thus, in our quest to craft a meaningful existence, we are not merely sculpting our own story, but also shaping the narrative of the world to come. It is within these reflections that we find the impetus to infuse our lives with purpose and altruism, striving to leave behind a legacy that enriches the tapestry of humanity.”

My mother-in-law passed away a year ago. And hearing stories about her from her sisters, she seemed to live a life like of a superhero. She saved them from every unfortunate event that happened to them. And she continued to do that with her children. She did everything she could to give them a fighting chance in life. While she succumbed to her sickness and was not able to do much for her grandchildren, her legacy to us was that.

She was suffering and made it known at the end, but before that, her pain was not known to anyone. She kept going until she really couldn’t anymore. Until her powers ran out and the only thing she left was the memory that even if a person has taken a bad road, she will still extend help as much as she can, even if it meant pain.

So for us still living now, what could we consider a legacy? I haven’t figured it out myself but I think, for now, I would follow in some of her footsteps – help others to stand and fight on their own and live their lives as they want to. Maybe make a superhero of everyone.

The idea of leaving a legacy is a profound contemplation for anyone still living. What constitutes a legacy may vary from person to person, but for some, it involves following in the footsteps of those who have come before us, particularly those who have exhibited qualities of empowerment and compassion. In this context, it can be about empowering others to stand on their own and pursue their aspirations freely. It’s about fostering a sense of autonomy and self-determination, essentially transforming everyday individuals into their own kind of superheroes. This can manifest in various forms, from mentorship and support to activism and advocacy, ultimately striving to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive as their authentic selves.

In the end, superheroes die. But their death meant the worst is over. The villain is gone. Those who are left are to battle their own villain. And emulating her superhero act, I think it would be very helpful to leave a legacy of people who can be superheroes too.

  • Flexibility is not availability

    Flexibility is not availability

Flexibility is not availability. Being flexible at work usually means being available all the time. This may not be the right meaning.

Does it really mean being available when needed? When you say you are highly flexible, does that equate to being able to attend to other people’s concerns all the time? When is enough?

When you are interviewed for a job, one of the usual questions is about being highly flexible. You immediately say yes thinking that it could not be bad and that you can still negotiate your time. Well, most of the time, you are wrong.

Flexibility in the workplace is often presented as a desirable trait, and it’s understandable why many would readily agree to be highly flexible during a job interview. The initial allure of appearing accommodating and adaptable can overshadow the potential implications and demands of such an agreement. While the intention may be to retain a sense of control over one’s time, the reality can often be quite different.

Agreeing to high flexibility without fully understanding the scope and expectations can lead to challenges in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It’s crucial to engage in open communication with employers regarding the specifics of flexibility and to negotiate terms that align with personal needs and boundaries. True flexibility should involve a reciprocal understanding and respect for both the employee and the employer, promoting a harmonious and sustainable work environment.

It’s important for individuals to approach the concept of flexibility with a discerning mindset, recognizing the potential impact on their daily lives and well-being. Open dialogue and clear parameters can help transform the concept of flexibility from a potential source of stress into a mutually beneficial arrangement.

When asked about flexibility, it only means that you are expected to be working when you are asked to work. For rank and file, it could only mean changing shifts, especially in a BPO setting. For managerial positions, it is totally different. The expectations are higher. You will be receiving messages on your personal numbers and the expectation is for you to respond, may it be just for a simple question or something bigger that you need to attend to, even if it is not your regular working hours yet.

The concept of flexibility in the workplace extends beyond simply being available to work when asked. When discussing flexibility, especially within the framework of a BPO setting, it often pertains to the ability to adjust shifts for individuals in rank-and-file positions. This can involve accommodating changes in work schedules to meet the operational demands of the business.

In contrast, for employees in managerial positions, the expectations around flexibility take on a different dimension. It often involves being reachable on personal contact numbers, and the expectation to respond promptly, whether it’s a simple query or a more substantial matter that requires attention, even outside of regular working hours. The level of responsibility and accountability in such roles can lead to a more encompassing scope of flexibility, where the demands of the position may transcend typical working hours.

Whether it’s adapting to shifting schedules or being available for critical communication and decision-making outside of regular working hours, the concept of flexibility in the modern workplace encompasses a diverse set of expectations across different levels of the organizational hierarchy.

The pandemic has brought work from the office setting to our homes. And while this is beneficial for a lot of people as time and effort from commuting has been reduced, the concept of flexibility has taken a different turn. Since you are at home, maybe doing nothing, maybe you could do the work right there and then. Anyway, you already saved time from commuting, not to mention preparing to go to work, and you could use that time to get some work done.

Flexibility is not the same as availability. It is not the same as being available all the time. To me, it only means that you have the freedom to make necessary adjustments in your daily routines and schedules as how you see it fit in your personal life. Adjusting and moving things around to attend to your priorities should be the core principle when we think about flexibility.

The concept of flexibility holds significant value in our daily lives. It’s important to highlight that flexibility is not synonymous with constant availability. It does not imply being at someone’s beck and call consistently. Instead, it embodies the freedom to adapt and modify our daily routines and schedules in a manner that aligns with our personal lives. This freedom allows us to make necessary adjustments, ensuring that we can attend to our priorities and responsibilities effectively. Embracing flexibility entails being able to maneuver and allocate time and resources in a way that resonates with our individual needs and aspirations, thus fostering a healthier balance between our personal and professional endeavors.

If your priority is work, so be it. If your priority is your family, so be it. To each his own. But being available all the time to attend to other people’s concerns is not flexibility. Living your life so you can be ordered around and do what you are told to is not how I see life should be.

It’s important to establish boundaries and prioritize what truly matters to you. Sometimes, it’s necessary to take a step back and reassess how we spend our time and energy. We all have our unique priorities and responsibilities, and it’s essential to honor those while also maintaining a sense of autonomy and self-determination. Striking a balance between meeting the needs of others and preserving our own agency is crucial for a fulfilling life. Ultimately, finding harmony between our obligations and personal aspirations is key to leading a life aligned with our values and desires. Embracing this perspective can empower us to live authentically and with purpose, contributing to a sense of contentment and fulfillment.”

Be available to do what your priorities are. Be flexible enough to adjust to what the chaotic world is giving you. Being available is not being flexible. Be flexible to be available for the things that really matter to you.
